The Iowa Hawkeyes are determined to make a run to the Big Ten Championship, and several key improvements are essential. After finishing sixth in the conference last season with a 6-3 record and an overall 8-5, enhancing both defense and offense is crucial.

To succeed, Iowa needs to secure victories in critical matchups. They will kick off with a home game against the Indiana Hoosiers in Week 5, facing tough opponents in Penn State and Oregon in the following weeks. Winning these games is vital for their championship aspirations.

Iowa must also address their weak passing game, which ranked second to last in the Big Ten with only 1,711 yards and 10 touchdowns. While the Hawkeyes excelled in rushing with 2,564 yards and 30 touchdowns, a balanced offense is necessary for sustained success.

On defense, the loss of standout linebacker Jay Higgins to the NFL creates a gap that needs filling. Last season, Iowa's defense ranked eighth with impressive statistics, including 16 interceptions and 29 sacks.

Quarterback protection remains a concern, as Iowa allowed 34 sacks last season. New quarterback Mark Gronowski, who brings a strong track record, needs a solid offensive line for effective play.
